Saturday 27th Sept saw us play a pre-season friendly against an all start select from NLVC & Glasgow Mets.
Final score was 2-3 (19-25, 18-25, 25-20, 17-25, 26-24)
A good start to the season with us taking a couple of sets off of some tough opposition. Nicola, Hilda, Sharon, Mags, Gill and Nixie, were all present to get the GI season rolling. It wasn't looking good at the start of the 1st, 6-0 down with the girls struggling to get the ball on the floor against some great defending. Sleeves were rolled up and we got about about our business raised the level of defence and clawed back into the game. Ultimately the start left us too much to do though losing out 19-25.
The 2nd set was better, we raced into a 5-0 lead off Gill's serve - we were dealing with some big hits, but struggled to convert with a counter attack. Individual errors and lack of focus were costing us and again the set past us by as we surrendered our early lead, losing 18-25.
The third was great we spoke about individual errors and impact on the game and managed to cut some errors out. Our efforts were rewarded proving to ourselves what we can do and taking the set 25-20.
The all-stars rallied in the 4th and swept us away, although the level of play was still pretty good.
The fifth set was tight all the way, with both teams nosing in front at different stages. We just pipped it 26-24 - phew! A 3-2 loss feels so much better than a 4-1.
A big thanks goes to the all-stars for making it a really good worthwhile pre-season excercise. Thanks go to Fiona, Jillian and Chrissie from Mets and to Aileen, Caitlin, Sarah, Kim and Tom from NLVC. |
