Welcome to the website of GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL Volleyball Club.

HOT NEWS :

Its official, we've just changed our name to 'GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL'.  This has been done to reflect the current make-up of our club. Until now, you'll have known us as 'Glasgow Irish'.

We have to make a confession though… nobody in the club is actually Irish.  In fact our closest link is Sinead with her Canadian-Irish roots.  When we reflected on this, we also have Welsh, Dutch, Polish, American and even a little bit of Aussie in the mix!  Not forgetting the odd Scot or two of course!  In other words, we are more ‘International’ than Irish and this is the key to our new identity. It also has the benefit that we keep the “G.I.” shout and provides a link to the history of the club.

To recognise our new name we have a new logo and it has been designed to reflect our international sphere. A big thanks to David Holmes from Auto Illustrations for helping us out.

So why go to the hassle of changing our name after the season has begun?  Well it is designed to coincide with some of the exciting things which have been happening at G.I. recently.

We now have a new venue.  We have moved out to the East End of the City to Smithycroft Secondary School.  With great co-operation between Culture Leisure Sport and the School, we will hopefully host out first National League Home Match here.  Special thanks go to Gillian McGuire, Gavin Steel and Margaret Talent. Also thanks go to McMillan Bros, Ibrox for transferring our posts to the school.

Now that our feet are definitely in the school, plans are afoot to kick off a junior section at the club.  This should be starting soon on a Tuesday night, in the hour before the adult session.  This is initially going to be offered to senior students at the school and surrounding area.  The location in the East of the City is ideal, because we should be able to offer volleyball in an area where there isn’t already an established club to compete against.

Last season we established links with Caledonian University Women’s team.  With a view to expanding the club, we have maintained this link.  Three of the Caley girls came along to Tuesday’s training session and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

LEAGUE

G.I. compete in the Womens National League Division 2 and have finished 2nd in the last two seasons, reaching the play-offs against the 7th placed team in the 1st Division, which was too tough an ask for us each time. The standard of play is getting better each season and we hope to go one better this time and avoid another playoff series.

At present there is only the womens team. However, our aim is to expand the club, hopefully having sufficient numbers to field two womens teams and to eventually get a mens team off the ground again.

Club History

The club originally founded as a Mens Team and achieved the feat of being promoted from District League through to 1st Division in 4 successive seasons. They peaked finishing 2nd in the First Division. There were two mens teams before the women joined in 2000 having won the Glasgow District League in 1999. Sadly, neither mens team compete any longer, but club legends such as John Carden and Tam Kerr still manage a monthly game at the Kelvin Hall.

This season we have started training at Smithycroft Secondary School in Riddrie (Close to Junction 12 of the M8). We are in the process of getting set up to play our home matches in the school on Saturdays and we are nearly there. Training started on the 19th August.

Coach

Our Coach is Malkie! He has been coaching for 4 years & was helping out with the National Womens Team in their run up to the recent European Championship qualifiers. He also coached the Caledonian University women last season and can be found on a Monday night looking after the District League Volleyball too.
